A GUIDE TO SAFETY TIPS FOR TOURISTS

 

AT THE AIRPORT

Always keep your bags where you can see them.
If you feel uncomfortable about people around you, move away, or go to the nearest security office.
Do not allow other people to tamper with your bags.
Use only registered porters, ask for some kind of recognition.
Make sure that your bags and luggage have locks.

ACCOMMODATION

Just like anywhere else in the world, do not leave your luggage unattended.
Store all valuables in the safe deposit box in your room or at the hotel desk, and ask for a receipt.
Keep your room on safety chain when in and if someone knocks, check who it is before opening When out, lock door and hand in key at desk.

ON THE STREET

Do not publicise your valuables - Jewellery , camera's, binoculars, CD player and video camera.
As much as possible dress like a local – sandals WITHOUT socks!
Use credit cards or, if not possible please carry only small amounts of cash.
At night, avoid isolated dark places.
Be aware of your surroundings.
If you need any information, a policeman or officer will be glad to assist you.
Prior to embarking anywhere on foot, get advice from where you are staying,
If you want a taxi, your hotel or the nearest tourism information office can recommend a reliable service to you.

IN THE CAR

NEVER pick up strangers.
Like anywhere else, your safety is largely dependant on your own common sense.
Always know where you are going, and pull to one side to check your map frequently.
At all times keep doors locked, fasten seatbelts, and leave windows open about 5cm.
It is an offence by law that mobile (cell) phones be used while driving. Use a hands free kit.
NEVER display valuables in the car – camera's handbags clothes etc should be in the boot.
Mobile phones should be placed out of sight, but easily accessible.
Drivers and passengers should be aware of their surroundings, particularly at traffic lights and stop streets.

ON THE BEACH

Swim only at beaches manned by lifeguards.
Swim between the beacons.
Obey lifeguards' instructions.
When encountering difficulties while swimming, raise one hand above the head.
Use adequate sun protection cream, even in cloudy weather.
Do not take valuables to the beach. Always leave them in a safe/deposit box at your accommodation.
Avoid mixing alcohol and swimming.
Do not take glasses or bottles to the beach.
When swimming in the sea, consider asking your neighbour to keep an eye on your belongings, or leave them with lifeguards or in a locker.

VISITING SITES IN RURAL AREAS

Establish how to observe the cultural protocol in the area to be visited.
Visit traditional areas with registered tour operators and guides.
Get advice from the local tourism office in the region for the best routes to follow.
Do not stop to pick up strangers.
Do not give sweets or money to children.
